How does my garden grow?

Often my garden grows mostly on it's own. There are just not enough hours in the week to give it the attention it deserves ( but what gardener does not complain of that ?) If you are not from here and especially if you have not lived in the south, our zone is 8 1/2....that is a significant fact if you order from those wonderful and pricey catalogues. Also, remember being in the coastal south you must take heat and humidity into account. Trust me you will not get a lupine or a peony to grow more than one season down here! My advice is that you choose things that are purported to grow in both zones 8 & 9......this is mistake proof! Never fear there will always be contradictions to this rule,i.e.things that are never suposed to grow here will be doing great in some mavens garden...RESIST TEMPTATION unless you have unlimited funds and a stronger back than mine!

GREAT RESOURCES:
When in doubt trust
 the
Extension Service...
Soil Kits are available to send off to University of South Fl....they can help identify pest, disease and give you untold information ...
most questions can be answered over the phone...located at 3740 Stefani Rd , telephone :
472-5230 escambia.ifas.ufl.edu

be sure and check out the agritourism ...this gives
places to buy locally grown vegetables

Annie in the midst of  Clumb BambooClump Bamboo is an excellent gardening tool....quick coverage w/ out running in her garden

" I adore this plant ! " If you have never expeirnced clump bamboo check into it.It does not run it expands into a wider clump.
Like the other type it gives quick dense coverage!

My Favorite Nurseries:

Olive Road Nursery  1615 Olive Rd. 477-9862...great quirky place...competitive prices to the box stores..some natives, lots of bananas....I once got the deal of the century on some Crepe Myrtles....Currently (July '09) he has a great selection of Japanese Maples including the "Butterfly" variety....mammoth elephant ears....Must see !

Lot's Plants 10740 Chemstrand Rd. 476-5519 call first to see if she is there...beautiful Japanese Maples...primarily foundation plants...interesting selection.

Garden Gate 3268 Fordham Pkwy 932-9066 Great place....herbs,large assortment of perennials, plants you discover in Fine Gardening Magazine ( www.finegardening.com/ )you might also find here, garden art( tasteful), butterfly & bird info... these ladies know their stuff...in Gulf Breeze

Floral Tree Garden 3040 S.Hwy. 95 A, ( North of Ten Mile Road) Probably the widest selection in the area...when you cannot find it anywhere else they will have it....no bargains...better sources for information elsewhere but cannot beat the variety

Woerner Turf  1332 Creighton Rd, Originally only Turf and hardscape material, they always have had the best rocks in town. Now they have partnered with one of the largest wholesale nurseries around and have a really competitively priced nursery. Limited in scope now but big plans for the future. You are going to love the idea gallery they are installing.....it is a must see for all of us who want a gorgeous path...or patio and just cannot quite imagine how to pull it off....all beautifully landscaped. I was impressed not only by what they are doing but by their congenial staff !

One last word....

I still check Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart.........sometimes you just cannot beat the prices or the bargains.....just do not rely on the advice or depend on the fact something sold there will thrive in our area....
